Waikiki is Honolulu but Honolulu is not necessarily Waikiki
Waikiki is a manmade peninsula on the east end of Honolulu on the south shore of the island of Oahu. Waikiki is also the most popular destination on the island of Oahu, and Hawaii in general. The gorgeous white sand beaches, along with hundreds of options for nightlife, dining, shopping, accommodation, transportation and its close proximity to Honolulu International (Hawaii's primary airport) all come together to make Waikiki the most convenient and accessible destination as well.
Waikiki today is vibrant and alive with Aloha! Back in the 1800's Waikiki was essentially a salt marsh fed by the runoff from the mountains on the southern coast of Oahu. In the early 1900's the Alawai Canal was created to channel the rain water to the sea, thus the Waikiki Peninsula was created. In its early days Waikiki was mainly farm land and its beaches were the playgrounds of Hawaiian royalty. As the constant stream of visitors to Hawaii continued to grow and grow Waikiki was eventually transformed into a resort area.
