Wailuku is small peaceful and budget friendly. Like other quaint Hawaiian towns Wailuku has all but escaped modern development, it has all the warmth and charm of 19th century village. If you want to check out the shops in wailuku you will have to get an early start as few of them are open past sunset. Kahului Airport is easily accesable from Wailuku just a few miles to the east of town.
Heading north out of town will take you to Iao Valley State Park., It is here that Kamehameha the great won his victory on Maui further securing his campaign to unite all of the Hawaiian islands for the first time in its history. Along the way to the Iao Valley State Park you will also pass by many plantations and gardens which are open to the public for unguided tours. A myriad of hawaiis native, and imported horticulture can be found, among them orchids, palms, and hibiscus.
