Paia "The Windsurfing Capital of the World"Because of Paia's location on the North Shore of Maui, and its proximity to Ho'okipa Beach, it has become the Mecca of windsurfing, and kitesurfing alike. Paia had already become a hotspot for windsurfers in the early 1980's but with the advent of kitesurfing in the late 80's its popularity exploded.
From humble beginnings... The town wasn't always this booming. Way back in the 1800's it grew up around a sugar plantation, that was still operating in the year 2000, making it the longest continually operating sugar plantation in Hawaii. All that almost changed in 1946 when the town was hit by the largest ever tsunami recorded in hawaii. Thanks to the hard work, aloha, and surviving spirit of its people the area was rebuilt and continues to thrive.
