Comments: During my brief stay, until I was evicted by the manager, I observed seriously aberrant behavior by the manager. Several times he suddenly evicted guests for no reason than asking if there are recycling or compost facilities available. He calls it "making waves". I attempted to intercede in one of these episodes on Jan 28. As a result
I was also evicted, and the local police were called, quite unnecessarily.
A complaint was sent to the BBB, naming the owner,Mr Ernest Tamishiro. He did reply.

My stay at this hostel was very intimidating. The manager a mainlander mike aka Maikiki acted very inappropriately to myself and other guests. When we arrived he smelt like marijuana, appeared under some the influence & was very rude/ condescending. While explaining the rules he (Mike) also made an outrageous statement like if he hadn’t liked the look of us he would have told us to get out, WAIT, theres more, he asked to use my credit card for a personal purchases and said that if we didn’t lend him one he had a stack of credit numbers from other travelers he could use. He insisted and requested that we pay cash. At one point we felt a little like we were being stalked because he admitted to me that he actually listens in on conversations. I personally watched him speak very nastily and talk down to guests and refuse other people entry from the hostel saying he was full when he definitely was not. Do not be afraid to contact the local office listed above if refunds are denied under these circumstances.

Comments: Be afraid to act like yourself there.
If you don't mind seeing at a burnt out 40+ hippie, and hearing his beliefs and perspectives on EVERYTHING all day this place is perfect for you!
Besides him the place is good.

Comments: STAY AWAY. My wallet along with all of my cash and credit cards were stolen my first night there. Mike or Makiki acted like it was my fault and that i lost it. Got in my face and threatened me when the cops were there. I stronly suspect he was involved in this. Just camp at anini it is cheaper and safer. I write this out of great regret not bitterness, and just want to help other avoid having this happen to them.

Comments: The Kauai International Hostel was an enjoyable stay. Here is my experience: The hostel is well run and the manager, Mikiki keeps a few rules such as lights out, cleaning up and overall respect for the place and for each other in the front of everyone's mind so that as a whole, the hostel is a warm, safe, friendly place. He has a strong personality and I think this is a good thing because it keeps things flowing. Next seat sale, I'm heading back.
Thanks, It was fun.
