Hostels, also known as backpackers, rucksackers, or youth hostels, specialize in providing budget accommodations to adventure travelers.
Hostel lodging is generally sold per bed in shared dorms, rather than private rooms like hotels. Better hostels also typicaly provide female only dormitories.
Most travelers stay at a hostel from three to seven days though many also stay for just one night or for as long as 30 days. Hostel accommodations usually consist of shared dorm style rooms. Kitchen, and bathroom facilities are often shared with other guests. Some hostels may also offer private or semi-private rooms.
The vast majority of hostel guests tend to be between 18 and 30 years old. Some hostels are restricted to guests within a certain age range. Far more common are hostels which accept guests regardless of age.
One of the major attractions of hostels, aside from the budget friendly rates, is the chance to meet and interact with fellow travelers at hostel arranged events and activities. Hostels often provide, organize, or make available free or low cost tours and activities, such as hiking, BBQ, movie nights etc.
