Welcome to the Koa Wood Hale & Pateys Place Hostel! We are the cleanest, most chillin hostel in the Hawaiian Islands!
Enjoy yourself in either a private room/shared bath good for one or two persons, a deluxe private that sleeps up to 3 adults, or dorm bunks separate by gender.
Even though we are right in the middle of downtown Kailua Kona, the Koa Wood Hale is an oasis for you to calm your soul. Enjoy the downstairs hammock, next to a collection of bird feeders that attract a dozen varieties of local birds. Dine at the picnic table next to our wildflower patch, with smooth reggae music playing in the background. The sitting area next to the fish pond and rock waterfall is a favorite as well. Upstairs, the BBQ area, the lounge chairs and the other hammock are great places to enjoy the sprawling view of Kailua Bay by day, or the wonderful sunset.
What a great place to relax!
Of course, on-site we have high-speed internet terminals (free wi-fi), coin-op laundry, DVD movies and mountain bicycles for rent, and horseshoes, and darts for your enjoyment. We have our own "black sand beach" out back, a shaded area for yoga or meditation, and a host of flowers, fruits and vegetables growing around the property to make things pretty! We start each day with complimentary 100% Kona coffee and a smile, and we think you will too when you are here!
For your additional convenience we have a self-service laundry, free parking, and bedsheets and bath towels are provided. Join us for a relaxing time in Kona!

Comments: what makes a great location is the quality of management; for starters, the head man in charge is named "Zero", abrupt, controlling,
dishonest. we made our rsvp the same day we arrived, he claimed via phone hostel was full, if we paid an extra $25 he could fit us in. we arrived, we quickly learned that there was only one other guest checked into the hostel.
micromanaged to not wear our shoes inside of hostel on a hard, cold surface which was similar to concrete, but much smoother. Roaches galore.

Comments: I loved it here. I spent only a few days here but I wish I could have stayed longer. Absolutely loved the atmosphere and loved the people. The reggae was great, too. I will definitely stay here again as soon as I can.

Comments: Most homely hostel on the big island! I stayed 4 hostel dorm room & 1 cabin on the big island, here is the most homely, relaxing place. Nice reggae music, hummock, garden, barefoot floor, free Kona Coffee in morning, free bath towel, good access to town & super marcket, cheap internet ($1/day!) & loundry ($1/road + free washing powder!). But, in my opinion, quiet time till 8am is too much, and there are fleas in dorm room (it makes -1). Be prepare for them!

Comments: This is my first time staying in a hostel. I stayed in a semi private room the first night and moved down to the dorm. I like the layout, hammocks, early morning rocking chair time. Staff has been helpful, the place is very clean. I even got to ride the scooter! Aloha!

Comments: I love this Hostel! Waking up to ragga every morning made my day(s). We Stayed in a double room that shared living space with another couple who were barely there. Very Clean, we had our own kitchen(did I mention the oven), bathroom WITH Bath tub and a living room with a TV and DVD player! STYLEY! Super comfy bed too.
After backpacking and camping around with my boyfriend for months these things were a treat. Close to everything and all kinds of good extras.
Very cool and nice staff. Totally on it.
Thank you barefoot lovelies!
I'll be back!

Comments: This is one of the nicest hostels I've stayed in. Beautiful semi-private rooms with a shared kitchen and bath, and the view from the second floor porch is beautiful. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I had a hard time hearing the recorded directions on their voicemail, but when I called and told them where I was, I got great directions. They are also walking distance from downtown and the beach, so it's a great location.

Comments: This hostel is one of the cleanest and friendliest hostels i've stayed in so far and i've been travelling for 3months now!! For $25 and a days worth of internet use for $1 you can't really go wrong. The dorms are a good size and the lounge and kitchens are very well equiped and comfy. Nice neighbourhood and hammocks outside for chilling! You get a true Aloha welcome and leave with a big smile and relaxed persona....Enjoy!!

Comments: I am glad I read the review before mine! I was there while Corey was there, and it seemed that people were lined up to get into the place, that they were doing the best job they could to accommodate everybody, reservations and walkups. The place looks even better than it did a year ago when I was here before, and the vibe is chill with the reggae music, the bird feeders, the fish pond, the flowers growing every where...I love this place!

Comments: I was moved to two different rooms while I was there; they seemed to over book their rooms. There was an uncomfortable energy. I wouldn't stay here again

Comments: This was my first time staying at a hostel and I have nothing but good things to say about this place. At the end of my 5-day-stay, I didn't want to leave. Even though I was excited to see the rest of the island, it was hard giving up my spot at Patey's Place. When I decided to live on the big island long-term, the manager gave me advice on where to work and even set me up with an apartment. Couldn't have been more satisfied.

Comments: I had made reservations six weeks in advance for a semi-private room for seven days, when I got there they said that I only had book for three days. It was late at night and I had to look for another place that could give me seven days. I got the feeling that some changed my booking to fit in a some they knew.

Comments: I have stayed in the hostel many times and was very dissapointed with the way I was treated this time. I was told by some younger guests that this hostel does not want older people staying there. They say they don't like the vibe and that hostels are meant for younger people that don't have money to stay anywhere else. I was told this by the young man checking people in. I was so uncomfortable I left. Hey folks one day you will be older too.

Comments: I'd like to thank Zero and his team for their daily effort, which makes this place like home... or have you seen another manager that shows up with flashlights for the guests, after 2 min. blackout? Sunscreen and bugspray, bookexchange, bikes to rent, free parking, hamock and birds in the garden... All these details make this place unique! Mahalo!
