Where backpackers call home while exploring the Big Island of Hawaii.
Located in the heart of historic downtown Hilo, within an easy walk to: bus terminal, farmers market, movie theaters, restaurants, shops, museums, library, post office & beautiful Hilo Bay. A beautifully restored 1913 hotel with European charm and comforts yet provides guests with modern amenities
Its old grandeur remains: The original, grand wooden staircase opens to an airy common area with wood wainscoting and 13-foot ceilings. The building, one of the oldest surviving wooden structures on the island, has plenty of modern charm, too. Bath and shower rooms are new, as is a kitchen/break room. There is high-speed Internet access and cable television, an outside patio garden area, free coffee and tea, a billiard table, storage lockers, free local phone calls and more.
Cool, comfortable Hilo Bay Hostel is ideally located to visit nearby tropical rainforests, hike to scenic waterfalls, or explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where Kilauea Volcano (sometimes referred to as "the drive-in volcano" for its accessibility in terms of viewing the lava flow) has been erupting continuously since 1983.

Comments: Stayed here for 2 nights, everything was ok, nothing fantastic, but no real complaints. It is pretty clean and the staff was nice.

Comments: Excellent hostel. The staff was amazing. Our bike tour started at 7am, but the hostel kitchen isn't officially open at that hour. However, the staff made an exception for us and we were very grateful. We had breakfast and hit the road all ready to go. Just wish it didn't rain so much in Hilo :-( If you come with your bike, bring fenders!

Comments: Wonderful hostel with a great staff and a great experience. I felt that the atmosphere was truly "aloha" and that the staff went out of its way for everyone...the feeling I got from staying there was that I was important and the hostel wanted me to feel at home...also, great location downtown close to cool shops and free hawaii county busing...thanks so much for a great stay!!!

Comments: Cons: VERY noisy at night because it is right on a main road, I couldn't sleep and actually moved to another hostel. No tours or excursions available from the hostel and hardly any helpful tourism info. Main big grocery stores a LONG way away. A long way from beach. No shuttle bus service. Also, they keep caged birds which I consider unethical.
Pros: Spacious rooms. Big sturdy beds. Friendly, helpful staff. Very clean. Close to main town and places to eat.

Comments: I would definitely recommend this as a great place to stay. I've been there twice! This is a very-very clean, respectful, well run hostel. It is in a great location and they don't tolerate 'partiers'. Only drawback is the traffic noise sometimes at night. Just use ear plugs & everything else is great! They have most everything you could need and will tell you where you can get it, if they don't. The staff is the best! : )

Comments: Clean hostel with friendly hosts, good access to the town, good shower, nice common space. No hunging line & little bit too much cost for washing & drying machine ($3.75 total + $1 for washing powder) makes -1. Room can be noisy by running cars on street. Internet cost $5/hr at here, but it has high speed connection.

Comments: We (couple 30 and 34 y.o.) stayed 3 nights this May there. It was excellent! We had a private room and it was better than some so-called-hotels:-) The location is clean, the staff friendly and we even had an ocean view room:-) So i would book it again if i come back to big island!

Comments: I really loved Hilo Bay Hostel. The staff there were some of the friendliest people i have met. The hostel itself is amazing, it looks every bit as good as it does in the photos. Very clean very classy. I'd recommend this hostel to anyone going to Hawaii's Big Island

Comments: This hostel is great! If you like nosalgia, ambiance and clean, clean, clean--this is the hostel for you. In the style of a traditional boarding house with original woods fixtures and loaads of charm; Hilo bay Hostel is convenient and more than worth the money. A must try!
