Hilo Hostels - Arnott's Lodge
Big Island sunset

Over time we have evolved the Lodge into a facility that offers almost everything the Budget traveler could desire. You can bring your own tent and pitch it in our beautiful camping lawn area or you can luxuriate in our new Deluxe rooms with private ceramic tile bathrooms. Between these extremes are bunks in our dormitories or our private bedrooms with shared bathroom and kitchen for the more economy minded.

We have three stations of high speed 24 hour Internet access, you can visit the town, supermarkets, or the mall by taking our shuttle or using our $2 a day bicycles or you can walk to our nearby coastline with daily Turtle watching and Whales in season. We are 300 yards from the only white sand beach on this side of the Island.

Comments: Such a great place to stay! Clean, friendliest and most helpful staff around- and there's a lychee tree!! Washer + dryer, game night, locked dorms. This is THE PLACE!

Comments: Unbeatable tenting experience. Clean grounds, outdoor based facilities, unmatched cost. Short stroll from fantastical beaches. Rules posted and not unreasonable, and everything seemed shift-able in accord of circumstance. All outdated bad reviews here are from before Kauao Kawehi Kailinu joined the front desk. Great staff. Superb time.

Comments: Totally unacceptable..I stayed in middle of March having stayed before about 10 years ago..found it exceeding expensive @ $70 a night for a cramped space, thin and uncomfortable mattress, unresponsive staff for the most part, misinformation regarding check out times..nothing posted.locked out of our room, demanded an extra days payment to allow access can do better than this..never again! Owner must be greedy and it extends to the staff!

Comments: Great beach location, excellent tour to Mouna Kea (the only one that goes from Hilo), free guest appreciation dinner they put on every Saturday (a nice touch), delicious fresh Lychees from the huge tree that grows in the grounds, good cleanliness and you can hire bikes for $3. No complaints at all. Oh, except the sign telling you not to talk about your `problems' to other people whilst staying at the hostel!!!!

Comments: Cons: Prices were a little higher than advertised for excursions and bike rentals. A long way from main town and shops. Lots of bugs! Pros: Lots of good tours/excursions arranged by hostel. Close to amazing black rock beach where I saw Giant Turtles. Shuttle bus every day to airport and town. A movie room with big screen and a huge movie selection. Drinks and snack machine. Ok sized rooms, clean. Big outdoor relaxation areas. I even ended up staying longer because it was such a good place.

Comments: This was worst hostel experienced. As with all, they have rules but pay close attention as rules are many, varied, and strictly enforced. You are under constant surveillance here. General feeling was an "us against them" mentality. Very strange. Price was ok, but higher than listed online, and the location was really good. Swim beaches were close enough to walk. Bikes on offer, although it rained so I didn't try. Everything will be a charge here, which not true at most other hostels I tried. Booked the lava hike, even though it was very clearly explained that there is no lava seen but still seemed like good price and experience. But driver/guide was only 16 y/o! I can't believe it legal for guide of tours to be a minor as it didn't feel safe. Tried to cancel on these grounds, but told of cancel policy. Still didn't go and was told by mgmt that they provided the tour, and I was required to pay. It was not their fault that I wasn't literate to know cancel policy. I still cannot believe guide can be 16.

Comments: hate to break it to doug, the owner, but his really "fun" hostel was no fun at all. really negative rules & long explanation sheets are plastered everywhere, a note by the t.v. instructed us as to what we should be watching on t.v. the day staff was reallly unfriendly semms doug is mostly interested in selling tours check out the new hilo bay garden hostel down the road, looks like a far better bet

Comments: Wonderful hostel experience! Met travelers from Japan and Germany, rode rented cruiser bicycle to nearby beaches (excellent bicycle helmet--I plan to replace my own with one identical to the one borrowed from Arnott’s), enjoyed delicious guest appreciation dinner Saturday evening. Mr. Arnott drove me to airport the next morning. Guests friendly and interesting. Sleeping room and kitchen scrupuously clean. Limited time kept me from volcano tour, but looking forward to that on the next trip.

Comments: The hostel is in a rough area that is close to nothing. It IS cheap though. Seems to be half populated w/ permanent folk that have drug and alcohol problems. Please stay somewhere else if you visit Hilo. You may have an ok time at Arnott's, but I sure wouldn't bet on it. Read the reviews on other web sites. Bad hostel!

Comments: Terrible, terrible, terrible. Don't make the same mistake we did. The location is really bad as are the facilities. Management staff is rude and dishonest. Don't stay here. You can rent a car and easily see Volcanoes National Park on your own. Would recommend Kona side of island instead. If only we had known!
