Hilo city of water and fire ! The city of Hilo is located on the eastern side of the island of Hawaii aka The Big Island. It is home the the university of Hawaii campus on the Big Island, and Hilo International Airport. Hilo has the dubious distinction of having the largest raindrops ever recorded on earth, nearly the size of a baseball.
Surrounding the city are some of the most amazing landcsapes ever. High volcanic mountians covered in lush green rainforrest, rolling fruit and macadamia farms, and of course the coastline where blacksand beaches are scattered amongst the surf pounded cliffs. Because of the abundant volcanic activity in the area there are many hotsprings, and even some large "hot ponds" where the sea and volcanos meet.
Hilo is a great base for exploring Pele's playground. Volcanoes National Park is just a short drive from town. The rangers at the park give some of the best tours of the lavafields, since they are constantly monitoring the activity of the lava flows the can get you closer, more safely than just about any other tour.
